Department of Energy Announces 71 University-Led Nuclear Research and Development Projects

May 6 marked an interesting date in the development of nuclear energy, the less glamorous brethren of other alternative energy sources. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) for 71 university-led nuclear research and development projects that could see the light of day as early as September 2009, barring any unforseen delays.
One of the highlights of the increasing scope of the U.S. commitment to nuclear research and development is the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) and the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP), especially considering the heated debate over the safety, ecological impact and long-term value of building additional nuclear facilities.
