Your Rights as a Customer

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) adopted certain rules to ensure your rights as an electricity consumer in Texas are protected. The PUCT Web site summarizes specific Texas electricity consumer rights including:

  • Obtaining and canceling service – Your right to switch Retail Electric Providers (REP) in deregulated areas of Texas; protection against "slamming," a practice in which an electric provider switches your electricity service without authorization or verification.
  • Billing issues – cramming or unauthorized charging, deferred payment plans, financial and energy assistance and meter reading and testing.
  • Disconnection of service – Failure to pay and disconnection of service, Provider of Last Resort and restoration of service.
