The True Potential of Renewable Energy in Texas

By energy_linguist, November 6, 2009, Energy Efficiency, FAQs

A new age of renewable energy in Texas is rearing its beautiful little head, proving that even the largest oil-producing state in the U.S. can lead the way to greater energy sustainability. It’s no secret that Texas is a wind energy champion. But what else is churning in the pot for green energy in Texas? Better to start at the beginning, where potential and actual meet.

Competition due to electricity deregulation in
Texas has provided a rather healthy market for Texas energy consumers. The ability to shop or switch service providers is of course a major advantage considering the potential cost savings, but the nature of how energy
is produced and sold in Texas has also opened Texas electricity consumers to a newer crop of
green energy sources.

The relatively untapped or undiscovered potential for green energy in large parts of Texas has pushed electric generation companies across the state to increase their production of clean energy, which of course also means an increase in the availability of green energy plans. It’s the clean alternative to
natural gas and petroleum. And as you may or may not know, Texas represents more than 12 percent of U.S. energy consumption, also generating a vast percentage of energy from natural gas
and oil.

While natural gas is certainly a much cleaner and domestically available (at least at this point) fossil fuel, Texas requirements for all Retail Electric Providers to carry a minimum level of renewable energy
as part of their overall energy portfolio means that renewable energy in Texas has increased greatly since deregulation in the late 90′s.

Stay tuned for more details on the nuts and bolts of Texas renewables.
