Updates to Transmission and Distribution of Renewable Energy in Texas
By energy_linguist, November 18, 2009, Energy Efficiency, News
In recent years, the Public Utility Commission
of Texas has approved a $5 billion plan to build new transmission
lines that could carry a capacity of 18,456 MW of wind power from West Texas
and the Texas Panhandle. The new transmission lines are speculated to complete construction and be fully operational between 2011 and 2013.
This is a big coup for Texas considering the available renewable energy produced from wind could increase significantly, most importantly the ability to distribute more clean energy across metro areas in Texas. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 new MW of wind energy could be generated and transmitted across new lines into area previously handicapped by an antiquated grid.
The bottom line? Increased production + new transmission lines capable of increasing distribution of renewable energy = win for Texas consumers. This could mean serious shifts in the availability of clean energy in Texas, making Texas electricity companies and customers big time winners in the Texas renewable energy market.
