Do you know whether you live in an area of Texas that can choose an electricity provider? If the answer is no, you're certainly not alone. Despite increased efforts by Texas Retail Electric Providers to educate Texas consumers on the benefits of deregulation and the power to choose, there is still a large beast of misinformation and confusion surrounding what can feel like a very complicated commodity at times.
Quite simply, the power to choose your Texas electricity provider is exactly as it sounds. You can compare providers and plans, read terms of service, compare rates, incentives, customer service ratings and so on to determine which electricity company in Texas best fits you and your family's unique needs.
That being said, not all of Texas is deregulated. In fact, just over 75% of Texas has the power to choose their own provider.

- Centerpoint Energy Service area – Baytown, Galveston, Houston, Humble, Kingwood, Pasadena and Sugar Land.
- AEP South Service area – Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen, San Benito and Victoria.
- AEP North Service area – Abilene, Alpine, San Angelo and Vernon.
- TNMP Service area – Lewisville and various cities throughout Texas.
Remember, Texas electric choice provides you with options for smart shopping all potential electricity companies, so if you live in one of the above areas make sure to check available providers in your immediate vicinity for specials, rates and areas of service.
