Summer Tips When Out in the Sun
There is no age limit to wearing sunscreen. The following information applies to people of all ages. Sunburn is anything but a good time so we need to know how to avoid them but still “get some sun”. About 15 to 20 minutes before being in the sun, go ahead and apply sunblock with at least an SPF 15 evenly; those who are fairer can use SPF 30. Whether you are in the water or not, remember to reapply every 2 hours just to be safe.
Make sure to stay hydrated, the sun can be glorious but it can also be killer so just take a break every now and then to rehydrate yourself. Whether or not you are in the water or playing on the volleyball court, the human body tends to sweat so regardless, stay hydrated.
A serious threat to everyone in the sun for long periods of time is heat exhaustion. As a former camp counselor I have seen plenty of kids with rosy cheeks and sweaty faces but there can be more extreme consequences to heat exhaustion than just dried mouth. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are both things to be aware of if you know you’re going to be in the sun for a long time. You are not to worry if you keep in mind the tips mentioned above.
