Water safety

Summertime is here and the livin’ is easy, well not that easy if you have young children. I personally do not have any children of my own but I do have enough cousins to know some water safety tips. First off, it is crucial that kids be put in swimming lessons as soon as possible but reality is that all kids are not going to know how to swim, so here are some important tips to keep in mind.

  • Make sure that the area you are in is no deep than knee length. There are some “sandbar” areas that are shallow but one too many steps further and it may be hard to keep your head above water.
  • Some kids may think they have mastered swimming lessons but regardless do not allow them to dive in any type of water unless there is a designated area for that.
  • Be sure to allow a break period (once every hour is suggested) to use the restroom and hydrate.
  • There may be small fish and other items in the water or even trash floating around, small children love to grab things but they can be dangerous so just avoid touching anything foreign.

The beach and pool can be very refreshing during this hot time but we must keep in mind these tips in order to ensure safety and a fun time.
