Helpful Electricity Updates for the Hurricane Season

By Brooke, August 13, 2010, News

After Ike, it took days, weeks or even longer for some people to get their power turned back on.  Now, we find ourselves back in hurricane season, and possibly facing another chance of power outages.  However, here is some good news.  This year, CenterPoint Energy is taking some precautionary measures in hopes of reducing the length of power outages and increasing communication with their customers.

One measure CenterPoint has taking is making updates to the energy grid.  According to an article from the Houston Chronicle, CenterPoint feels that with these grid improvements and the usage of smart meters, hurricane-related power outages should be shorter this year, which for me is always good to hear.

A second step is they have developed an internet-based map that can tell customers approximately how long to expect an outage to last.  The map is up and running and you can view it at CenterPoint Energy Electric Outage Tracker. Once you agree to the Terms of Use you can click on the link in the left-hand corner to find an address, street, city or zip code.  Note: for those of you who have a BlackBerry or iPhone, CenterPoint is working on an application that can be used for both phones, which will relay the same outage information.

While CenterPoint is making their updates to help Houston and surrounding areas get through this hurricane season, be sure to also check out Bounce Energy’s Hurricane Prep Center for hurricane tips, news and tracking to keep safe through this season.
