Best Of…Top Green Companies and Products

By Brooke, September 20, 2010, Green

There are so many “Best Of…” lists floating around, it’s hard to filter through them all.  Some are useful, some entertaining or even comical.  Most are subjective, but some based on facts.  You have financial lists (Fortune 500), smutty lists (People’s annual list of Most Eligible Bachelors), controversial lists (College Football’s BCS), and ridiculous lists (VH-1’s Best Reality TV Moments).

While some best-of’s have become more of an event in themselves, and other are propped up by advertising dollars, there are a few out there that provide useful information on products you may not have been aware of.  Below are a few lists and items that have helped me adopt more green practices around the home.  Regardless of their rank, it is nice to see both big and small companies doing their part to provide environmentally sensitive products to the market.

“Working Mothers: “Best Green Companies for America’s Children”
“ConsumerReports.org: “Best Green Cleaners, Paper Products for Your Family”

From those lists, here are a few products I have actually tried and enjoyed:

  • Annie’s Homegrown Mac ‘n’ Cheese:  A tasty product from a company that is environmentally responsible and supports organic agricultural practices and related charities.  And my daughter will actually eat this stuff (as will I)!
  • Clorox Greenworks Cleaning Products:  Unlike many green cleaning products, these do a good job and are actually affordable.  Clorox actually had the Sierra Club independently test and endorse this line of products, which speaks volumes.
  • Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent:  A non-toxic, non-irritating, hypoallergenic, biodegradable alternative to conventional petroleum-based detergents.  So it’s good for your body, and good for the earth.
