Green Food…Not Just Your Vegetables

By Brooke, September 6, 2010, Green

We’ve blogged about ways to greenify your home, your daily practices, even your children’s school supplies, but now we’re focusing on, my favorite subject, food. Some say the best organic food is the food grown closest to you. And the easiest way to purchase this type of fresh food is through farmers markets.

A farmers market is a great place for people who want to purchase locally grown, farm fresh produce at a good price.  Food sold at farmers markets is fresher and in better condition because it travels less than being trucked across the country to be sold at the grocery. It also tends to be cheaper due to less overhead costs (compared to a grocery store) and requires less gas. Not only is it beneficial for us, the consumers, but it gives farmers the opportunity to meet and build relationships with their customers as well.

Each market is typically open only one day a week so try to get there bright and early to have the best selection. Visiting a farmers market is especially fun to do when the weather gets a little cooler.  You can actually pick your produce without sweating!
