City of Houston Implements Stage One Water Conservation Measures

Houston finally received a little rain last week and while Houstonians embrace the rain it doesn’t make up for the long period without. This has been a pretty severe period of drought and the lack of rain and record high temperatures have made it necessary for the City of Houston to institute Stage One Water Conservation Measures.

The city is asking that you water your lawn no more than two days a week and between the times of 8:00 am – 10:00 am. For those with a even numbered home address it is advised that you water your lawn on Sundays and Thursdays and for those with a odd numbered home address you should water your lawn on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

The city is also implementing a water reduction program to help conserve water.

Some other ways that you can reduce your water consumption:

  • Make your showers 5 minutes or less; get clean and get out.
  • Do not let the water run when brushing your teeth. If you are not using it, turn it off then turn it back on when you need it. This is a big water waster.
  • When running the dish washer make sure there is a full load, the same goes for your washing machine; run when there is a full load.
  • Check for any water leaks you may have.
    • A trick for checking any toilet leaks is by putting food coloring in the toilet tank. If colored water leaks into the toilet bowl before it is flushed, water is being lost due to a worn flapper.
