Hurricane Update – Tropical Storm Arlene
By Julianne, June 29, 2011, Hurricane Prep
June 29, 2011, 10:55am – The first tropical storm of the hurricane season has made its way into the Gulf. Tropical Storm Arlene is expected to strengthen later today as it moves towards Mexico. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coast of northeastern Mexico from Barra de Nautla northward to Bahia Algodones.
According to Weather Underground, the major threat from Arlene is heavy rainfall. Rainfall accumulation is expected to be 4-8 inches over the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and eastern San Luis Potosi with possible isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches over mountainous terrain. Since these areas do not have much vegatation to absorb Arlene’s rains, the rainfall are likely to cause damaging flooding and mudslides.
