Hurricane Update – Tropical Storm Don

7/28/11 – Yesterday’s thunderstorm activity near the Yucatan Channel has transformed into Tropical Storm Don. Don is moving northwest and headed towards south/southeast Texas and is expected to make landfall tomorrow afternoon. With maximum sustained winds of 45mph which is expected to gradually strengthen, a tropical storm warning is in effect for Texas coast from Port Mansfield to San Luis Pass and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Texas coast south of Port Mansfield to the mouth of the Rio Grande. A storm surge is expected to raise water levels by 1-2 feet above ground level. Don is expected to accumulate 3-5 inches of rain.

7/27/11 – There has been thunderstorm activity near the Yucatan Channel that suggests that a circulation could be forming about 50 miles northeast of Cancun.
If this activity continues, a tropical depression could develop later today. The system is currently moving west-northwestward near 15 mph.
Reports say that this system has an 80% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
