Save Energy at the Workplace

We have written about various ways to save energy in your home.  From insulation and programmable thermostats to weatherstripping there are some sure fire ways to save energy.

While, saving energy in the home is very important for both the environment and your pocketbook, it’s also important to save energy in the workplace too. According to the Energy Star website, “the energy used by a building to support just one office worker for a day causes more than twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as that worker’s drive to and from work”. Even though taking on greener habits in the workplace won’t save you money, you will at least be helping the environment. So here are some tips on how to save energy at the workplace without impacting your daily routine.

  • Tip #1. Blinds. Just like in the home, blinds work well for in the office too. Keep them open during the winter to let in the warmth and keep them closed during the summer months to block out the heat.
  • Tip #2. Desk lamp. If you use a desk lamp, replace the bulbs with CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs). They last up to 10 times longer and use about 5% less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs.
  • Tip #3. Computer.  Look for the power management settings on your computer and monitor. You can set them so the computer and monitor automatically enter a low-power mode when not in use.
  • Tip #4. Water cooler. Who knew the water cooler could be an energy saver? By switching to an Energy Star model, it will use 50% less energy compared to standard units.
  • Tip #5. Turn off lights and electronics.  This is a pretty obvious tip but an energy saver nonetheless. When the last person leaves for the end of the day, remember to turn off the lights.
