Ercot Forecasts Record Peak for August 30: 66,190 MW

Heat advisories in Texas are out for for Monday and Tuesday with temps pegging between 107° and 108° on August 29 and 30.  With so many folks spinning up their AC to warp factor 9, The Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) announced that it expects electrical demand to spike at a record 66,190 MW.

In order to avoid blackouts and other problem with Texas energy providers , ERCOT offers the following conservation tips:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronic equipment;
  • Close blinds and drapes of windows getting direct sun.
  • set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.  When you are away form home, set your thermostat to 85.  A programmable thermostat can be set up to do this for you. Using it will also help keep your Texas electricity rates low.
  • Use fans in occupied rooms to circulate the air.  Turn them off when the room is empty or you are away.
  • Avoid using your dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers, or other home appliances during the peak hours of 3-7pm.
  • Keep refridgerators and freezers closed as much as possible.
  • If you have a pool, set the pum to run in the early morning or evening instead of the afternoon.
