Hurricane Update – System Developing East of Martinique Predicted to Become Hurricane Emily

8/3/11 - Tropical Storm Emily is expected to hit Hispaniola today. It has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving west-northwest at 14 mph. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Vieques and Culebra, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, southeast Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos islands. A tropical storm watch is in effect for the US Virgin Islands.
8/1/11 – A low pressure system is showing signed of improved organization 300 miles east of Martinique and a tropical depression could form later today. As the system moves west-northwestward at around 15 mph, it has 90% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours. A hurricane hunter aircraft is currently investigating the disturbance to determine if it has a well-define surface circulation center.
Tropical storm warnings would be issued for portions of the northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands if the system becomes a tropical cyclone today. Regardless of tropical cyclone development, this system will bring locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds to portions of the lesser antilles today and tonight.
