5 Ways to Make Your Move Environmentally Friendly

By Adam P. Newton, May 29, 2013, Green, Moving

Whether it’s your dream house or the latest in a string of apartments, moving into a new home can be quite exciting. But it can be a bit difficult to complete that move while remaining friendly to the environment. By implementing these five unique tips in some fashion, you can easily make your move a green move!

#1: Use Eco-Friendly Packing Materials
5 Ways to Make Your Move Environmentally Friendly with Bounce EnergyOne of the best ways to have a green move is to pack up your things using materials that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. The first step in this process is to not use the Styrofoam packing peanuts you see over there on your left.

Next, you should ask companies and small businesses in your neighborhood for any free cardboard boxes they might have left over from a recent shipment. This can include liquor stores, bookstores, and grocery stores, but the point is to re-use what’s already been created.

If you wish to go a step further, there are many different companies that make packing materials that won’t harm the environment, such as boxes and foam, typically using post-consumer recycled sources.

Others even offer plastic crates that come delivered to your old house and can be returned to the company for use by others after you are done with your move. You can also look on websites like Craigslist or Freecycle for people giving away their packing boxes for free, just because they know that others will need them, and they’d rather not throw them away.

#2: Hire an Environmentally Friendly Moving Company
Your new home could be just across town or it might be across the country, but we think that hiring a moving company that strives to be environmentally friendly is rather important. Make sure any company you work with uses best care practices when it comes to using and servicing their trucks, and pay special attention to those that opt to employ a fleet with vehicles using bio-diesel or natural gas vehicles instead of gas guzzlers that abuse fossil fuels and pollute the environment.

#3: Make As Few Trips as Possible
Obviously, the fewer trips you make when moving items between your old home and your new home, the better. Why is this? By making a high number of back-and-forth trips, you’re increasing your fuel usage and cost, which is bad for the environment and your budget. By opting for fewer trips with bigger loads or a larger truck to hold your stuff, you can ensure that the move is completed in as few trips as possible.

#4: Recycle those Packing Materials

You need to protect your stuff, but you also don’t want to have a bunch of paper, plastic, and packing peanuts end up in some gross landfill. The best solution for your green move? Use old newspaper. Not only is there plenty of the stuff available for you to use (just talk to your local paper for old issues), the newspaper cushions dishes and other breakable items quite well. Plus, it can easily be recycled at a local recycling center.

Did you opt to use cardboard boxes in the move to your new home? Use your favorite social networks or the aforementioned Craiglist and Freecycle options to pass them onto other people versus simply throwing them away. The more packing materials you can recycle instead of throwing away, the more environmentally friendly your move will be.

#5: Utilize Green Living Options Once You Have Moved
Finally, the best way to make your move a green move is to utilize green living options once you are in your new home. For instance, you could purchase cleaning products that focus on keeping the planet clean and free of chemicals. There also several DIY cleaning products out there that you can easily make at home, if you’re extra crafty.

You can also purchase Energy Star-rated appliances to increase the energy efficiency of your home. If you’re looking to be extra friendly to your environment, you should seek out an electricity company that offers energy plans that use 100% renewable energy, which means you can be green all year round.

By helping keep all of these tips for a green move in mind, your relocation will be as environmentally friendly as possible.
