Whether it’s self improvement or making a difference in the world, our resolutions represent our hopes for the future. Doing it on your own can be hard, but with a little help from the digital age, you can achieve those goals and make the most out of a fresh new year!

Weight Loss

Fad diets and extreme workouts will always receive lots of attention, but the simple truth to getting control of your weight is to get control of what you eat. Looking at dieting the way you would look at budgeting is the first step to shedding weight. Here are a few smartphone apps to help with this process:

Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal: Lose weight with MyFitnessPal, an easy-to-use calorie counter. This app has the largest food database of any iPhone calorie counter (over 3,000,000 foods) and amazingly fast food and exercise entry. FREE (Apple and Android)

Fooducate: Lose weight and track your progress with a great app that looks beyond the calories and helps you eat healthy. Scan a product barcode to see what’s really in your food. Fooducate will also show you healthier alternatives! I use this app regularly and think it’s fantastic for learning what’s in my food and for finding healthier alternatives. FREE (Apple and Android)

Volunteering and Giving

Another popular resolution is to give back to your community. Whether it’s with your time or  money, there are many ways to do good for others. As you set your mind to good causes, let these smartphone apps guide your way:

Volunteer Match: This award-winning service makes it easy for good people and good causes to connect. Search 62,000 open volunteer opportunities to find the perfect one for you, as many of your favorite nonprofits are here. See what service opportunities are closes to where you live, work, or go to school, and then share your activities with your friends and family.  FREE (Apple Only)

Education and personal growth are fantastic goals for the New Year. If your resolution involves learning something new, here are a couple of apps to get you started:

Khan Academy: Designed to help you learn almost anything for free, Khan Academy covers a massive number of topics, including K-12 math, biology, chemistry, and physics, finance, and history. Spend an afternoon brushing up on statistics. Learn about the fundamentals of computer science. Prepare for the upcoming SAT. Expenditure: Expense manager is great application for managing your expenses and incomes.  This app allows you to track expenses and incomes by week, month, and year as well as by category. Other options include multiple accounts in multiple currencies, scheduling payments and recurring payments, taking a picture of receipts, setting payment alerts, and exporting data. Mint.com Personal Finance: This app allows you you to track, budget, and manage your money all in one place, so you can see where you’re spending and where you can save. Open an account, add your bank, credit, loan, and retirement accounts, and Mint will automatically pull in and categorize your transactions. Quit Smoking

Smoking cessation is always a hot topic around New Year’s. Quitting is never easy, but with the help of some technology, it can become a reality. Here are two apps to help you quit smoking:
