With Mother’s Day occurring on May 11th, now is a good time to make some crafts with your children to celebrate the wonderful women in their lives. You can help your own children create these gifts for you, their grandmothers, or perhaps you can share these ideas with their other caretakers!

Hand Print Apron

HAND PRINT GIFTS

When I asked other moms what kind of crafty gifts they would love to receive from their children, their overwhelming reply was hand print crafts.  We will look at a few clever ideas to preserve your children’s small hand prints, such as the apron in the photo above. For these projects, enjoy the mess! You will need old clothes or painting aprons to catch spills from exuberant painting. When looking for paint, use material appropriate paint for long-lasting results, e.g. fabric paint for fabric and outdoor paint on terracotta pots such as Patio Paint.

Thumb Print Necklace

4) THUMB PRINT PENDANT – This thumb print pendant will be a sweet way for mom to carry her children with her everywhere she goes. You could easily personalize this gift by letting the children pick their own color Sculpey and beads. If necklaces aren’t Mom’s thing, you could also make the pendant into a bracelet, key chain, or car decoration for the rear view mirror.

Shrink Dink Art Necklace

6) ART NECKLACE – Kids of all ages can participate in this craft idea using shrink plastic!

  1. Cut out a piece of shrink plastic with a craft punch or by hand.
  2. Remember that the plastic will shrink down to about half the size after it’s finished baking in the oven so take this into consideration when cutting the plastic.
  3. The next step is the most important step to remember:  be sure to punch the hole in the necklace before you bake it!
  4. Next, let the children use colored pencils or pens to create their artwork.
  5. Follow the directions on the package for baking & shrinking their designs.

If you don’t already have a chain, yarn or ribbon will also work. Voila!  A lovely keepsake for mom!
