9 Fun Family Vacation Destinations in Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York

By Bouncey, July 18, 2014, Events & Fun

Growing up, the word “vacation” elicited nearly as much excitement as waiting for Christmas to finally arrive. Going on vacation meant no school and no boring chores to do around the house. Now that I’m planning things, “vacation” doesn’t elicit the same feelings –  just stress about picking the perfect location, arranging the activities, and of course packing. So, while we can’t help pack for your trip, we can suggest a few vacation destinations across Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York that are guaranteed to be a hit with your entire family.

1) Poconos Mountains –Stuck in a stuffy office? Cooped in the car or house all day? Choose an outdoor playground like the Poconos Mountains! Enjoyed by both locals and travelers, we recommend an all-inclusive stay at the Woodloch Pines Resort. Voted “#2 of the 25 Best Hotels for Families #2 in the US” by TripAdvisor for 2014, Woodloch caters to the whole family with a wide range of meal plan choices, themed packages, and housing options that accommodate all family sizes – plus give you room to bring Grandma and Grandpa along. Enjoy golfing, pampering at a spa, catching the staff’s live shows, or time in nature with hiking, fishing, and more.

2) Crayola Experience – Located in Easton, PA., the Crayola Experience allows families to fill their day with color-filled creative fun. Say hi to “Big Blue,” the world’s largest crayon, weighing in at 1500 lbs. Various attractions cover four different floors – develop your own shade of marker, name your own crayon, or melt a crayon into a special souvenir. Scarlet and Turk work with the resident Crayonologist to show you how crayons are made in a live show.

3) Hershey, PA – When you think of a classic candy bar, the first name to come to mind is normally Hershey’s. Discover the story behind Milton S. Hershey’s success story in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Find out if you are a Twizzler or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup at Herseypark, as ride requirements are defined by what piece of candy you are. Create your own chocolate bar at Hershey’s Chocolate World Attraction. The Museum On Chocolate Avenue shows you how Hershey built the largest chocolate factory in the world by 1915. Think of yourself as a chocolate connoisseur? Try samples of chocolate from all over the world at the Countries of Origins Chocolate Tasting.

4) Queens County Farm Museum – Stretching out over 47 acres, the farm is the longest continually farmed land in New York. It’s open seven days a week all year long, averaging over 500,000 visitors a year. Take a stroll around the farm through the vineyard or feed goats. On the weekends, take a guided tour through the historic Adriance Farmhouse, and if weather allows, go on a seasonal hay ride from April through October. On your way out, don’t forget to pick up some farm-fresh goodies like raw local honey and fresh eggs.

5) Bronx Zoo

One of the largest zoos in the world, the Bronx Zoo spans a vast 265 acres with more then 4,000 animals calling it home. The zoo is so large that it would be difficult to see everything in one day. If you are unable to spend multiple days at the zoo, take a two-hour tour and see some of the most popular exhibits like Congo Gorilla Forest, Himalayan Highlands, Tiger Mountain, and World of Reptiles. Kids can hop aboard a grasshopper or a praying mantis at the Bug Carousel to enjoy indoor activities year-round.

6) LEGOLAND – Everything is awesome at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester! Your kiddos can learn to become a master builder at the Lego Master Builder Academy. Test your speed at the Build and Test Zone where even the hundredth of a second can make all the difference in the world. Little builders ages 1-5 can enjoy the Duplo Village. Builders young and old can create to their heart’s content.

Texas

7) Texas State Aquarium – Since opening in 1990, over 11,000,000 people have visited the Texas State Aquarium. The aquarium is a private, not-for-profit organization that strives to be a leader in wildlife rehabilitation and supporting conservation. Visit Eagle Pass to meet Grace, a rehabilitated bald eagle, as she soars through a habitat that mimics a West Texas canyon. Experience several touch pools including sharks and stingrays, enjoy underwater views like never before, and explore the exotic side of the Amazon.

8) Dr. Pepper Museum

Most Texas residents have seen someone wearing an “I’m a Pepper” shirt, as our obsession with the beverage is nothing to be messed with. At the Dr. Pepper Museum, you can learn how this love affair started, explore the bottling room, and finish the tour by sampling Dr. Pepper straight from the soda fountain. Take a tour that focuses on team-building, as your family creates a new soft drink, develops a brand name, and designs a logo, label, and marketing slogan. Finish off all of your hard work with a Dr. Pepper float!

9) Highway 66

If you have younger children, the Disney Cars bug has infected your house at some point. Feed the love of this movie with a trip along the famous Highway 66! The U-Drop-Inn in Shamrock, TX was a direct inspiration for Ramone’s body shop in the movie. Built in 1936 using the “art deco” style popular at the time, the inn was known for welcoming customer service and delicious food. Although the inn started out privately owned, the City of Shamrock is the current owner, and it now serves as a museum, Chamber of Commerce, visitor center, and gift shop. If the U-Drop-Inn really wowed your kids, then check out the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, which inspired the mountains surrounding Radiator Springs.
