Life Hacks to Save Money: the August "Back to School" Edition!People enjoy life hacks for several reasons, but we like them for their money saving properties. Better yet, websites like DealNews.com and Lifehacker provide lots of money-saving tips on a regular basis, specifically by recommending a yearly timeline of when you should purchase certain items. These websites monitor prices all year to discover big discounts on items.

In our eighth installment of this series, we check out the key items to purchase during the month of August with a focus on back-to-school readiness.

Back-To-School Deals

School Supplies, Apparel & Dorm Furniture. You know the phrase “the early bird catches the worm?” This phrase rings true for many cases; however, regarding purchasing many back-to-school items it does not. Most retailers will start advertising for back-to-school savings starting in July, but waiting till August (especially mid to late August) can result in savings of an extra 40%-50% off sale prices.

According to dealnews.com, school apparel retailers such as American Eagle and Levi’s discounted their merchandise up to 50% of sale items last year and are expected to do the same this year. In addition, regarding dorm furniture, Walmart sold futons for as low as $89 last year and computer desks for $29 and are expected to have similar low prices this year.

Tax Free Weekend. As seen above, waiting till August to shop back-to-school can result in some great savings. Now, couple those savings with Tax Free Weekend, and shoppers can see some pretty significant discounts along with not having to pay any sales tax. Remember, for small ticket items, not paying sales tax will result in only slight savings so any larger back-to-school purchases you may be planning for may be best to buy during this weekend. Texas residents should take advantage of Tax Free Weekend on August 8th-10th, 2014, and you can view other tax free weekend this month here.

Laptops. Back-to-school season remains one of the best times of the year to purchase laptops, which makes August the perfect month to buy for lovers of technology. For those in the market for mainstream laptops or notebooks, prices started hitting rock bottom in July. As for Mac users, look for Apple deals at authorized resellers like Best Buy, which actually beat Apple’s back-to-school sale by $200 (dealnews.com).

Non-Back-to-School Deals:

Patio Furniture. In past years, August hasn’t been the best time to purchase patio furniture. However, according to dealnews.com, they’ve already seen abnormal discounts – prices much lower than last year making now a great time to buy to take advantage of the low prices and better inventory. Keep an eye on large retail stores such as The Home Depot, Target, and Sears for discounts up to 75% off.

Storage and Organizational Supplies. August is a great month to purchase these supplies because it’s back-to-school time and its a few months after the spring cleaning craze. While these supplies are very useful for college dorms, they are also great for anyone with closets that look like they are going to explode.
