Announcing the Winners of the 2016 "BE More" Scholarship from Bounce Energy

At Bounce Energy, we’re committed to being “more than just an electricity company” and going above and beyond for our customers. With a range of customer rewards, community charity support opportunities, and other convenient products and services alongside our competitive electricity rates, we offer our customers more than what the average electricity company does.

That’s why we’re proud to run the Bounce Energy “BE More” Scholarship! Every year, we set out to find three outstanding students who demonstrate how they are “more than just a student”. High school seniors and college students across the state of Texas apply by sharing their stories about the hard work they do both in school and in their communities.

This year, our fourth annual “BE More” Scholarship was a success! We received over 1,700 applications from inspiring students devoted to giving back to their communities, making it that much more difficult to narrow down the list. Fortunately, we managed to choose the three winners of the 2016 BE More Scholarship:

  1. Sofia H. of El Paso, Texas
  2. Grant C. of Houston, Texas
  3. Lauren S. of Wichita Falls, Texas

Here’s a little bit about these great students:

Sofia H.

Sofia follows her family motto – Echale ganas – which conveys affectionate encouragement to hard work regardless of the circumstances. As a result of the exceptional work ethic her mother has instilled in her, Sofia has now dedicated herself to eradicating malaria and other neglected tropical diseases. She serves as a Champion Council Member for a United Nations partnered grassroots campaign called Nothing But Nets, serves as an RA for a professor to study and collect health information on breast cancer in Latin women, and represents the END7 campaign.

Grant C.

Diagnosed with Stage 1 Diabetes at the age of 9, Grant has dedicated himself to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, helping mentor newly diagnosed kids and educating families on proper diabetes management. Realizing there wasn’t much information on living with diabetes for Spanish-speaking families, Grant collaborated with JDRF’s Gulf Coast Chapter to help translate information cards and brochures into Spanish and distribute them at events, walks, seminars, and functions in the greater Houston area. As a result of his efforts, more Spanish speaking families have attended JDRF events to learn more about living with diabetes.

Lauren S.

In September of 2012, Lauren was diagnosed with cancer. Her life soon became a whirlwind of doctor visits, missing school, losing her hair, and not being able to perform simple acts like unloading the dishwasher without getting dizzy. In college however, Lauren decided she didn’t want to be defined as just a cancer survivor, so she started the A.S.H. Project to help kids across North Texas.

Lauren and other volunteers dress up as princesses, super heroes, and other famous characters and visit sick children in hospitals to help brighten their days.

Thank you again to everyone who applied to our 2016 Bounce Energy “Be More” Scholarship. We enjoyed reading the ways in which each and every one of you is more than a student, and we wish the best of luck to all of you with your future endeavors. We hope everyone continues to give back to their communities while pursuing their college degree.

Congratulations to our three winners and keep an eye out for the 2017 edition of the “Be More” Scholarship!
