Post-Move Tips: Settling In
So now you've arrived at your new location and the truck is in the driveway and it's time to unload and start arranging things in your new home. Easy, right?
Well, not quite. There's a few things you should do as your things are unloaded:
- Check that your utilities (electricity, gas, and water) are on. (If you forgot your electricity turn on, call us regarding a priority turn on.
- Inspect your furniture and appliances for damage or loose parts as it comes off the truck.
- Be sure to make a note if any boxes are missing (or damaged) and what they contained.
- If you used a moving service, personally report any damage to your moving agent or coordinator.
- If you are not going to hook up your appliances yourself, schedule an appointment with a qualified service technician.
- Because of weather, allow appliances and electronics 24 hours to warm up to room temperature before plugging them in. Water condensation during cold or humid weather can damage circuit boards and present a fire hazard.
- Post a clearly drawn floor plan of your new home near the front door so your movers will know to place your furniture.
- Keep all your documents and receipts from your move in a safe place for future use when you file federal and state income taxes.
When everything is accounted for and unloaded it's time to rest, eat something, and celebrate. You've made it! Unpacking your things should be fun and might feel a bit like Christmas Day as you rediscover your old belongings in your new home.
Settling in
While you're figuring out how to arrange your living room, it's also important to get out of your house and explore. Here are things to do your first week:

- Visit the local Department of Motor Vehicles for vehicle registration and driver's license information.
- If you haven't done it already, open a bank account.
- Spend a day comparison shopping at different supermarkets in the area to find out which has the best quality and selection.
- Find out where and when the farmers' market is held.
- Register your children for school.
- If you own a pet, begin shopping around for local veterinarian clinics.
- Find the closest gas station with the best pricing.
- While running errands, experiment finding the fastest and easiest route to commute to and from work.
- If you plan on using public transportation, get information on schedules and stop locations.
- Introduce yourself to the neighbors and ask them for information about the area.
