Happy Earth Day 2009

So, you hear about all the hoopla. Earth Day this. Earth Day that. But what is it and why does it matter?

Earth day is celebrated every year as a day of awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is celebrated every spring in the northern hemisphere and in the fall in the southern hemisphere.

So what can you do?
Simply, today is a day to rethink your impact on the environment around you. From the groceries you buy to the car you drive to the energy that powers your home. Today is the day to contemplate change on those pesky little habits.

Here's some ideas:
Where energy's concerned, think about switching to a renewable energy plan. Bounce Energy is currently running an Earth Day special with our Blue Sky plan, where you not only can switch to 100% green and clean energy, but you also get your choice of a $50 Home Depot gift card (to buy those eco-friendly light bulbs you've been wanting) or a $50 donation to the World Wildlife Fund.

At home, you can:

  • Save 10 gallons of water for every 2 minutes you lop off your shower.
  • Save up to 5% on your electricity bill when you clean out your lent filter on your dryer each time you use it.
  • Use "auto switching"  power strips and surge
protectors. These devices shut down when your appliances
    are turned off.
  • Wash clothes in warm or cold water – hot water uses 80 to 85% more energy.
  • Clean your air filters – by doing this once per month,
your air conditioning unit will run at peak efficiency.

The list can go on and on, but you get the picture. If you need more to cure your Earth Day fix, just search Google for "earth day" to get news, events, tips and photos.

I would also recommend checking out TreeHugger and IdealBite.

Here's to a happy Earth Day to all.
