Cool Front Savings

By Brooke Drake, October 23, 2009, Energy Efficiency

I love this time of year! The weather is getting cooler and the humidity is dropping. It’s funny how it takes Texas until the middle of October to finally start feeling like fall, but honestly I can’t complain. This past weekend, we were watching the New England vs. Tennessee football game that was in Massachusetts and it was already snowing! The field was completely white! It was crazy to see, and it definitely reminded me why I live in the south (nothing against the north, I just couldn’t deal with the winters).

Anyways, it’s so neat to see that when the weather starts changing, it brings so many people out of their homes. Restaurant and bar patios become full and parks around town actually become crowded. Personally, I get excited this time of year because I know the holiday season is approaching and also because we are able to do more activities outside without sweating bullets. My husband, on the other hand, loves this time of year because we can actually save some money on our energy bill. Throughout the year when the weather is nice, we turn the TV and air conditioner off, open up our windows and head outside. Now that we own a home energy cost monitor, I was curious to find out just how much electricity are we saving by turning those just those two items off. Well, I did the experiment and the results were really interesting. Our kilowatt usage decreased by 6 times! (Note: our air conditioner isn’t the most efficient so results will vary). Imagine if you were able to do that a couple of times a week! It could really add up. It was so helpful to see firsthand the savings.

So if you’re looking to save some money then it may be helpful to turn your TV and air conditioning off and enjoy the nice weather while it’s here.
