Move Season: D.I.Y or Hire a Mover?

By energy_linguist, March 30, 2010, Moving

Moving boxesPreparing to move is no easy task. As we move toward the first of April and the onset of Spring, move season is becoming an all-too-quick reality for many of us. The biggest hurdle you’ll face right off the bat is whether to go it alone or go through the often scary and financially challenging process of hiring someone else to move you and your belongings.

Consider the major differences between a self move vs. hiring a pro before making a decision on how to approach your impending move.

D.I.Y.

  1. Truck rentals are often the most inexpensive means for a long-distance move because you’re paying a low fee for truck rental, basic insurance (optional), gas, mileage and a tow dolly if you’re hauling a vehicle (still can rent a truck with dolly and move 850+ miles for under a $1,o00; I’m living proof on this one). Any additional costs are entirely dependent on whether you’ll need boxes, furniture pads and other moving accessories.
  2. In addition to cost savings, you’ll have a bit more peace of mind knowing that you have full control over packing, loading and unloading of your belongings.
  3. Move on your schedule, at your chosen pace, with the freedom to extend the transition time if needed without worry over paying extra for storage costs.

Hiring a Professional Moving Company

  1. Leave the lifting, loading/unloading and hauling for the pro’s. Difficult maneuvers with heavy/awkwardly shaped furniture can be left to people trained and paid to handle such tasks, so you can concentrate on the many, many details of making your new home livable.
  2. Faster … enough said.
  3. Hiring a move means you can focus on the pre-move planning, move-day planning, house hunting, changing your address and so on, without also being responsible for all the packing, truck rental, loading the truck, etc.
