Save Energy and Money this Winter

With winter approaching, it may be beneficial for you to look into some easy weatherization projects for your home. By doing so, you’ll not only save energy but can save money on your heating bill too. Here are some simple ideas to help save energy and money this winter season.

  • Switch your ceiling fan. On most fans, there should be a switch that changes the direction of the blades. By reversing the direction it will circulate and push warm air down to your living space. Best of all it can cut your heating costs by as much as 10%.
  • Put up plastic. If you notice that cool air is coming in through your windows then this is a cheap alternative to replacing them. You can purchase a window insulation kit, from most hardware stores, that covers your window with a clear, invisible plastic. It provides a buffer against drafts and improves your home’s ability to retain heat.
  • Mind the gap. You can lose up to 30% of your heat through door drafts. A simple and inexpensive fix is to put a “draft snake” under a drafty door. You can either purchase one or create one yourself by using a rolled up bath towel.
  • Change your furnace filters. This is easy and also easy to forget, but replacing your furnace filters prevents dust and dirt build up in the system. A dirty filter causes your system to work harder to push air out plus can lead to expensive maintenance or system failure.
