Ties are a clichéd  Father’s Day gift from a bygone era. They’ve been replaced by a host of gadget chargers, smart watches, tools for DIY projects, and the latest in technological devices. Awesome as some of them are, we decided to consult the World’s Coolest and Tech-Savviest Dad to find out five of the neatest and practical tech gifts for Father’s Day. And by happy coincidence — that happens to be me.

1) Logitech Harmony Ultimate Home

At last – one remote to rule … well, nearly EVERYTHING. Logitech Harmony is an Internet of Things (IOT) hub and remote control that lets you control your home IOT tech and your entertainment systems. It sends commands from the remote or the app to devices using IR, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless signals.

Working with over 270,000 compatible home entertainment devices from more than 6,000 brands, it even supports my old Samsung DVD/VCR machine – yes, even a VCR. The system works on 802.11g/n WiFi and you can also download control apps for Android and iPhone. Retail price is around $250.

On the other hand, Google Chromecast is a more modestly priced streaming package. It’s a thumb-sized media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your television. It allows you to stream content from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to your TV screen. You can also download different apps to stream content from channels like Netflix, Huluplus, HBO, and others. It works off USB power and requires a 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n WiFi network — which by now is almost everyone’s. The price is right at just $35.

3) LifeProof FRE Power Case for iPhone 6

The big reason I don’t have a smart phone is that I do lots of manual labor, and I carelessly destroy things in my pockets. The LifeProof FRE Power Case for iPhone 6 may be the reason I can finally upgrade from my battered old flip-phone. Water, dirt, snow, and shock proof — that covers all of my routine chores without disrupting the phone’s functionality. Since it also comes with a 2,600-mAh battery, it doubles the battery life. It’s worth the investment at $129.99.

Incredibly handy for whiteboard interactions, conference presentations, and getting the whole family to watch TV, even at $599, it’s extremely cool.

5) Omsignal Biometric Shirt

Going way beyond wrist-bound health sensors, OM shirts come with fabric embedded sensors that collect your biometric data in real-time to a small bluetooth data relay module (aka “the little black box”) that clips on to the shirt. The data is sent to the OMsignal app in your smartphone where you can read your heart rate, breathing rate, breathing volume, movement (including steps and cadence), movement intensity, heart rate variability, and calories burned. Get two smart shirts with the little black box for just $240.
