5 Ways to Give Back in Texas During the Holiday Season

By Brooke Drake, November 23, 2015, Charity & Community

The holiday season is such a magical time of year. We gather with loved ones to dine on tasty food and then reflect on all the experiences and people that make your lives so wonderful.

It’s also the perfect time to give back to those in need, especially those who need help in our home state of Texas. If you’d like to give back but you’re not sure how, here are 5 ways to give back during this holiday season.

5 Ways to Give Back in Texas During the Holiday Season

Put your heart and brain to use this holiday season by organizing your family and friends to do some important charity work.

1) Organize a Collection

Contact a local charity you’d like to help and see what they need of this time of year. Then organize a collection among your family, friends, neighborhood, and/or school. Choose where people can drop off the donations for you to take to the charity.

2) Host a “Giving” Party

If organizing a collection is a little too demanding, then think about hosting a “giving” party. The inverse of the collection in Tip #1, this is an event you host or co-host with a friend: everyone brings over a donated item, socializes a bit, and then carpools to the charity to drop off the donation.

3) Adopt a Family

Several organizations around Texas provide opportunities to adopt a family for Christmas. For example, Soldiers’ Angels helps you adopt the family of a solider who’s been deployed. Many families in this situation could definitely use some help celebrating the holidays while their loved one is away. When adopting a family, your role is to provide the family with presents for the kids so they have something to open at Christmas. It’s a great way to show our military your support and gratitude for all that they do and sacrifice.

In addition to our military families, Operation Blue Santa is an outreach of several police departments around Texas that provides ways to adopt other families in need as well. A simple Google search for “operation blue santa” provides links to several participating Texas police departments.

4) Toys for Tots

It truly is better to give than to receive – especially when it comes to kids in need during the holidays.

This worthwhile organization provides toys and hope for millions of kids who are less fortunate. Toys for Tots collects new and unwrapped toys during the months of October, November, and December and then distributes those donated toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate kids in the community. You can donate an unused toy at one of your local area toy drop locations, host a Toys for Tots event at your home or office to collect toys to donate, or volunteer at the local warehouse.

5) Volunteer at a Local Soup Kitchen or Food Bank

Almost 90% of soup kitchens rely on volunteers so volunteering to help out at one would be extremely helpful especially during the holidays. There is a range of volunteer opportunities from helping to serve food, organize the pantry, etc. Click here for a full list of food pantries in Texas.

These are just a few ways to give back. The beauty of Texas is there are countless charities geared towards helping follow Texans. So we want to hear from you! How do you give back during the holidays?
