This April, Bounce Energy is proud to partner with People Against Leigh Syndrome (PALS), a Houston-based non-profit whose mission is to bring awareness, fund research initiatives, and support families impacted by this rare mitochondrial disease called Leigh Syndrome.

According to the National Institute of Health, “Leigh Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that typically arises during the first year of a child’s life.” Children who develop this condition experience a progressive loss of mental health, muscular system failures, and early loss of life.

PALS was formed in 2013 by the friends and family of William Martin, a young Houstonian who had been diagnosed with Leigh Syndrome. William “Will” Patrick Martin was born in 2009, and he developed normally throughout his first year – laughing, crying, and crawling around the house. At his one-year checkup in 2010, his parents reported that he was able to move on the floor, but he was having trouble walking by himself. The doctor instructed they return in three months, and there was little improvement at that time.

After a year of therapy and visiting specialists, Will was diagnosed with Leigh Syndrome, for which there is no cure or treatment. Due to the strength and perseverance of the Martin family and the community developed through the creation of PALS, William continues to hit many developmental milestones and live happily with his parents.

In addition to helping families impacted by Leigh Syndrome and raising awareness of the disease, PALS has successfully established a partnership with the UT Mitochondrial Center of Excellence. In order to accelerate research and find a cure, PALS is sponsoring a dedicated researcher who works on a variety of projects surrounding this heartbreaking disease.

Throughout the month of April 2016, you can help PALS in the fight against Leigh Syndrome by joining the Bounce Energy social media community. We have pledged to donate $2,500 to PALS as well as an additional $.50 cents for each new follower we receive on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram throughout this month. With a simple click of your mouse, you can help us raise awareness for Leigh Syndrome and foster additional support for finding a cure for young patients like William.
