How Can I Save Money When Planning a Fall Party?

By Brooke Drake, October 5, 2016, Events & Fun

Fall is the perfect time of year to host a party. The foliage provides a lovely backdrop to your soiree, and the change in weather creates the perfect climate for hosting guests outdoors. However, hosting a party can get expensive, so we’ve provided helpful ways you can save money while still decorating with style.

Use these three fall-centric themes to deliver great entertainment and camaraderie when hosting your fall party.

1) Fall-Themed Game Night

No need to buy a metal tub for this event. Just use a large ice chest you already own!

Throwing a game night party is such a fun way to spend the evening with friends or family. This event will bring people together and entertain them without costing of lot of money. And since it’s autumn and the weather is nice, incorporating an outdoor aspect to your games can be the perfect touch. To get you started, here are three of my favorite games to get the competitive juices flowing.

  • Bobbing for apples – This game can be hilarious to watch as adults try to grab apples with their teeth.
  • Stackin’ Apples – Using the same apples from the previous game, see who can be the first person to stack five apples on top of each other vertically.
  • Pumpkin head relay – Each player has to run from one side to the other balancing a tiny plastic pumpkin on their head. To make it harder, and funnier, add a few obstacles each player has to complete before they hit the finish line.

2) Seasonal Potluck

What easier way to save money on a fall party than getting the guests to bring the food themselves?!

There are two variation of this idea:

  1. Hold a traditional potluck. and simply ask everyone to bring a dish containing a seasonal food item such as pumpkin, apple, or squash. This is a fun way to taste different foods of the season, plus it cuts down on food costs since everybody brings a dish.
  2. Hold an “Iron Chef” potluck. As the host, you select the “secret fall ingredient” and have everyone (or your better amateur chefs) bring a dish containing that secret ingredient. Assign three people to judge the dishes (but don’t tell them the secret ingredient in advance) and have them choose the winner. People will enjoy the competition, and it makes for great entertainment while providing food for the party without you as the host spending much money.

As a host, I would recommend providing a heavy appetizer to make sure there is something hearty for your guests to eat as well.

3) Host a Chili Cook-Off

Yes, Texas chili purists – there aren’t supposed to be any beans in your chili. You try sifting through mounds of stock photography to find such an image.

To me, nothing screams “Fall!” like a good ole’ bowl of chili. And just like the Iron Chef party idea, hosting a chili cook-off is also a great way to give your guests something to do while providing food for your party inexpensively. As the host, it would be helpful to provide all of the fixings that go along with chili like chopped onions, shredded cheese, chips, and jalapenos.
