A week or three before moving day

  • Confirm all the arrangements with your mover.
  • Sort all the items by where they will go in your new house and pack accordingly. This will save you a lot of time when you begin to unpack.
  • Pack up inessential items early. The less you procrastinate the better!
  • Separate your valuables. You may want to keep these on you at all times.
  • Label all boxes with the name of the room it should go into and the items in the box.
  • Make sure you changed your address with the post office as well as updated all magazine subscriptions, etc.
  • Notify important parties about your scheduled move. These include your insurance companies, bank, employer and utility providers. In some cases you may have to transfer accounts to your new location or close accounts.
  • Make sure you took work off for your move.
  • Refill all prescriptions.
  • Pack your suitcases. Keep a week’s worth of clothes, toiletries and other essentials on hand. Think like you’re packing for a week-long vacation, because in some ways, that’s what moving week will be like.

  • Set aside items you don’t want loaded in the truck. Clearly mark them as such.
  • Keep your kids occupied. Tablets loaded with their favorite shows can be a lifesaver.
  • Make sure the truck and the people who show up are from the company you hired. Check that the vehicle number matches the number on your confirmation.
  • Have several trash bags on hand for last-minute trash.
  • Take care of yourselves and try to have fun; after all, you’re off to a new adventure
