6 Fun Things to Do with Your Dog This Summer

By Jessica Bivins, June 1, 2017, Family

Apart from restless grade-schoolers, no one appreciates summer more than your dog. Warmer weather and kids at home means more play time.

To make the most of these warm months, here’s a list of things that will ensure your dog has the best summer yet.

1. Buy a dog pool. The next time you’re out running errands, take a trip down the kids’ aisle and pick up a plastic kiddie pool for your pup. This will be the perfect backyard accessory for those days when it’s too hot to go play in the park but too beautiful to stay inside.

2. Have a day at the races. Chances are you know someone who has run a 5K or maybe even a marathon. This summer, make a commitment to your health and that of your dog by signing up to run a race with your favorite four-legged friend. The website Iron Doggy has a whole list of dog-friendly races for each state. Pick one out and start training together.

3. Help others out.  Do you have a sweet-tempered dog? The kind that gravitates toward people and gently nuzzles up to strangers? If so, there’s a way you and your dog can help the less fortunate. By taking the time to certify your pet as a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International (TDI), you and your animal may be able to participate in programs where you visit patients in hospitals and nursing homes. This is a great way to share your dog’s love with your community!

5. Go beyond the dog park. Of course you’re going to take your pooch to the dog park, but for your sake and your dog’s, you might want to shake up the routine a bit. Do some research and hunt down some dog-friendly beaches or restaurants, run through the sprinkler or go on a boat ride together.

6. Make a batch of doggy frozen treats. Summer is the time for frozen treats, for humans and for dogs. Now, you shouldn’t go and give your dog human ice cream, but if you spend a little time in the kitchen, you can easily make these delicious “pup-sicles.” Here’s how:

  • Mix a little water with one cup peanut butter and half a mashed, ripe banana.
  • Put some wax paper down on a cookie sheet.
  • Spoon the mixture onto the tray, as you would with cookie dough. You can also use cookie cutters to give a shape to the treats.
  • Put the tray in the freezer for at least five hours.
  • Pop out the shapes, give your pup a treat and store the rest in a container in the freezer.

With these six steps, you and your dog can turn a great summer into an unforgettable one!
