5 Inexpensive Things to Do in Texas This Weekend with Your Family

By Jessica Bivins, June 7, 2017, Events & Fun, Family

Summer is a great time to get out there as a family and take advantage of everything the Lone Star State has to offer. There’s a bunch of free events, shows and activities to choose from across Texas. So this weekend, be sure to get out and get some dirt under your shoes. Need some ideas? These are five of our favorites.

  1. Stargazing. We all know the lyrics to the song: “The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.” Now, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case for those who live in one of the major metropolitan centers of our state. Due to light pollution, millions in Houston, Austin, Dallas or other big cities might go years without seeing the stars as they were meant to be seen. So why not take a camping trip or a short road trip with your family out to a fabulous stargazing area such as Brazos Bend, Davis Mountains or Big Bend Ranch State Park? Bring a thermos of coffee because you’ll want to stay up late.5 Inexpensive Things to Do in Texas This Weekend with Your Family | Bounce Energy Blog
  2. Take in the Dallas art district. Encompassing 19 city blocks, the Dallas Arts District is the largest urban arts district in the U.S. (sorry, New York). Wander around, visit a free museum, take in a show or grab something to eat from a vendor in One Arts Plaza.
  3. Get messy. When’s the last time you had barbecue? If you had to pause to answer that question, then it’s been too long. It’s time you and your family hightail it to one of the many famous — some may say legendary — barbecue joints that grace our state. If you need help finding a place near you, check out Texas Monthly’s definitive list. If you think you live too far away from one of these hot spots, then we have two words: Road trip.5 Inexpensive Things to Do in Texas This Weekend with Your Family | Bounce Energy Blog
  4. Hot air balloons. If you’re around San Angelo, be sure to make your way to visit the Lions Balloonfest. In addition to having fun, colorful hot air balloons fill the skies, this festival includes a pancake breakfast; a car, bike and truck show; a kid’s zone and a raffle for a free balloon ride. Festivities begin on Friday, June 9, and wrap up on Sunday.
  5. Bikes and music. Everyone knows that Austin is the music capital of North America. You don’t have to wait for a major festival to come to town either, as music oozes from the city. This weekend is the perfect time to meander around the streets of Austin: the Republic of Texas Biker Rally is coming to town. The parades, amazing bikes and great Texas feeling that fills the city are not to be missed.

There are hundreds of other events going on in our state this weekend, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, Texas is many things to many people, and you never have to look too far for something fun.
