Hurricane season has started, and we want to ensure you and your family are prepared for the season. Most importantly, do not wait until a hurricane is heading your way to prepare your kit. Assemble and gather all the supplies beforehand.

What you really need in your hurricane prep kit depends on whether you plan to stay at home or evacuate. Let’s examine supplies for both situations.

Preparing a Hurricane Kit

Shelter at Home Essentials:

  • One gallon of clean drinking water and non-perishable food per individual ( and pets) per day for 3 to 7 days
  • First aid kit plus any prescription medications
  • A flashlight, battery-powered weather radio, extra batteries for flashlight and radio
  • Full gas tank
  • A ” go-bag” for each individual that includes clothes and toiletries

Evacuation Essentials:

  • One gallon of clean drinking water and non-perishable food per individual ( and pets) per day for 5 days
  • Pack 3-5 days of supplies – put water, canned food, and a first aid kit in a waterproof box
  • First aid kit and prescription supplies
  • Emergency cash in small denominations
  • Copies of important documents
  • ICE (In Case of Emergency) Card with updated contact information

Take some time to secure your home before you go. For instance, clear your yard, shut off utilities, windproof windows and doors, and lock your house.
